7 week programme
This is a very broad outline of what you can expect to do over the course of your 7 week pottery class, the timescale may vary and you may wish to spend more time on one aspect of the course than another. We have two throwing wheels and will ensure everyone has an opportunity to throw and turn pots. Our class sizes are small to enable individual guidance and help as and when required. At the end of your course all pieces will be glaze fired and a date arranged for you to collect your finished work (this is usually about two to three weeks after the course is complete).
Week 1
Hands on clay
A chance to get your hands on clay. Learn how to handle clay and make a thumb pot, coil pot, sculpt and slab build.
Demo on throwing.
Week 2
Throwing and Slab Building
Throwing pots and slab building a variety of pieces. Try out the pottery wheel learning about centering, opening and pulling cylinders.
Get creative and plan and create with slabs - a ceramic flower for a garden pot, a tea-light house, a cylindrical vase or a leaf dish are just some examples.
Week 3
Throwing, Turning and Slab Building, adding texture and detail
Demo on turning. Continue throwing and turning pots and working on hand built projects. Look at how we can use texture, engraving and sprigs to enhance our work.
Week 4-5
Consolidation & Creativity
Continue to master throwing and turning pots as well as working on hand built projects.
Demonstration of decorative techniques like sgraffito using underglazes. Finish greenware pieces ready for bisque firing, including applying underglaze to your greenware.
Week 6-7
Glazing
Learn about the different glazes which can be applied to your bisque ware pieces. Underglaze with or without clear dipping glaze, brush-on glazes or a variety of dipping coloured glazes. The use of wax resist, masking and combining brush on glazes will be explored.
