All about us and Smokey Cross Pottery

My husband Kenneth, my daughter Fernanda and I moved to Dartmoor 8 years ago.  Kenneth and I were teaching Mathematics for many years and spent a lot of time dreaming about a new venture.  We escaped to Devon and bought a home and business with holiday cottages in 2018. While there we decided to try a pottery evening class at Exeter College which is where our love for pottery began.  Sadly, I lost my amazing mum, Maureen, in 2021 and was fortunate to have been gifted some money which I wanted to put to good use, so we set up a pottery studio in one of our barns. We started offering pottery experiences to our guests staying in the holiday cottages and it was really successful. So in 2026 we made the move to our beautiful home in Dartmoor which had the scope for an amazing pottery studio and here we are.  We are a family of makers (even our daughter had joined a studio in Manchester where she now works).  Kenneth and I are learning all the time and have enjoyed setting up stalls at local craft fairs and events which have been very well received. We feel we can help others connect with clay in the same way we have. Our house, Holly Hill, is situated in Haytor within Dartmoor National Park by a small crossroads called Smokey Cross.
